European Works of Art from the Middle Ages to the XVIIIth century
Beautiful and rare tiles panel in polychrome tin-glaze earthenware, of uncommon small dimensions, made in Manises (Valencia) in the XIXth century probably as a commission for a private use.
It represents Saint Bruno of Cologne, founder of the Carthusian Order, praying in front of a crucifix and a skull displayed on a small piece of furniture. The composition is surrounded by a vegetal crown and is surmounted by an interesting and infrequent Vanitas: several memento mori elements symbolising the ephemeral life, death and passage of time, such as the skull, the winged hourglass, the scythe and the broken candle.
In a period ebonised and gilt frame.
Dimensions incl. frame: 35 x 25 cm
In very good condition. Two visible chips on the upper tile, wear on the frame.
