1889 Jekaterinoslaw (currently in Ukraine) — 1942 Auschwitz
Worked in Paris.
An important pastel on paper.
The nue represents Aicha, who came from Martinique and was the life companion of Sam Granovsky. Aicha was a famous figure in Montmartre, and was painted by Modigliani, Foujita, Kissling, Valotton.
This portrait is the best of a small series of large scale portraits produced in 1925 (he also produced smaller scaled, less finished pastel in the same period). Some are highlighted with gold leaf (like this one).
