French Furniture and Art Pieces of the 18th century and Empire period
Gilt bronze candlesticks with pearl, acanthus leaf and water leaf decorations from the Louis XVI period (late 18th century).
The Palais de Fontainebleau holds seven pairs of similar candlesticks, Claude Galle sold two in 1805, Ravrio sold a pair in 1805 and four pairs in 1806.
This example perfectly illustrates the nonsense of making attributions for objects (decorative arts) until the end of the Empire, since the principle of "copyright" or "intellectual property" simply did not exist. As in this case, it is common to see identical objects, delivered by various intermediaries.
One of the pairs similar to the present candlesticks was in the salon of the apartment of the King of Naples and described as follows: pair of chased and gilded copper torches, fluted stems, ornaments with inverted leaves
Condition report: very good condition of the gilding, original threaded stem, missing the bobèches.
