Magnificent lime wood sculpture (hollowed) of St. John the Baptist, who points with His right hand to the Lamb (now missing) on the Bible - since according to the Gospel of St. John, He had recognised Jesus at His baptism as the 'Lamb of God'. The Saint's face is serene, elongated, eyes humbly downcast; He wears a camel skin. Detailed carving of the face and hair. Excellent quality. Probably Upper Rhine region. Wear, cracks and losses (Lamb on the Bible...), multiple traces of woodworm. Later stand.
Dimensions (without stand): 44x31x17cm.
There is a certain resemblance with a Saint John in the Schnütgen Museum in Cologne dated ca. 1460 and defined as coming from Dortmund in Westphalia (inv. A 452, A 503 and A 508). R. Karrenbrock, Die Holzkulpturen des Mittelalters II, 1400 bis 1540, Cologne, 2001, p.406-408.
