Pierre Puvis-de-Chavannes (1824-1898
) is one of the greatest 19th century French painters and considered to be the precursor of Symbolism.
In 1890 he founded the new Société des Beaux-Arts.
He received many medals during his career and his works are present in the largest museums in the world.
Puvis de Chavannes began his studies with the greatest masters of his time: Henry Sheiffer, Eugène Delacroix and Thomas Couture. He also trains his eye on trips to Italy.
His beginnings in painting are difficult, he is often refused in the Salons.
These paintings are more classic at the beginning of his career and very inspired by the world of Théodore Chassériau, before he finds his own style. He also performs many wall decorations.
