Exquisite limestone sculpture of a very gentle bishop with empathic facial expression and compassionate presence. High quality carving especially of his countenance. He holds the remains of what most probably was a book in his right hand and of a crozier in his left hand. The traces of the vanished crozier can be retraced all along his robe down to the ground. The crozier may have had the replica of the cathedral - that he was bishop of – right above his left hand (in between the upright part and the curved part of his crozier). The upper part of his mitre has disappeared but in general the sculpture is in excellent condition (no restorations). Creamy limestone with remains of green, ochre, blue and brown-red polychromy. Most probably Burgundy early 15th century.
Dimensions: 70x25x14,5cm.
