French Furniture and Art Pieces of the 18th century and Empire period
Charming gilt bronze hand candlestick decorated with foliage and butterfly, from the Palace of Saint Cloud, Empire period. Attributed to Pierre Philippe Thomire.
Inventory mark StC 966 corresponds to "A richly chased and gilt bronze candlestick, vase bobèche, butterfly thumb (sn° ), 24 francs. ", in the margin: 1 candlestick lost on 31 July 1830. Write-off authorized" (AN, AJ19 306, f° 140v° and 141).
At the time of its release in 1830, this candlestick was in the bedroom of the Duchess of Berry. This room was the former bedroom of the Comte d'Artois, and a few years earlier, the bedroom of the Empress Joséphine.
The loss of this torch on July 31, 1830 is interesting: it is the day when Charles X left St Cloud for Rambouillet to flee the Revolution of the 3 Glorious in Paris. It is therefore possible that this torch followed the royal family in its adventures and then its exile abroad, because St Cloud was not looted during the revolution of 1830.
