Offered by Matthew Holder
A Renaissance gilt copper processional cross.
Italian, dating from the late 15th century (some appliqués) to the late 16th century (cross).
On a later turned wooden stand, it measures 56 x 34.5 x 13.5cm.
The cross is constructed with a wooden core, which is applied with repoussé and engraved sheet copper decorated with quatrefoils, C scrolls and flowers. To the centre of the cross is a copper figure of the crucified Christ, the terminals with the evangelists, the pelican in her piety, Saint John the evangelist and Mary Magdalene. All metalwork retains most or some of its original gilding, the cross has been damaged and repaired and the appliqués although period are not all original to the cross. The condition isn’t uncommon with these objects as they were regularly used for centuries, accidents happen so repairs must be made, as do trends change and the objects are updated.
