This bearded bishop seated on his throne bears a strong resemblance to the statue of Saint-Flour, patron saint of this town in the Cantal region, formerly located in Saint-Pierre cathedral and now housed in the Musée de la Haute-Auvergne. There is a similar rigidity in the attitude, very similar features with the short beard and very similar drapery, as well as the position of the feet. This Saint Bishop is therefore a rare example of 14th century statuary from Auvergne, following on from the famous Sedes sapientiae from the previous period, from which it has retained its hieratic style and the sacred character of a reliquary. Wear and tear (arms). Oak.
Dimensions: 44x20x16cm.
Provenance: Sammlung Bernhard und Romy Fahr (Fulda) / Sammlung Dr. Frederick Momm / Gallarus Arts (Katonah, New York)
