He made his debut in the circle of Marco Ricci where he learned the vigorous chiaroscuro contrasts that characterised his early works. He then substituted landscapes with ruins with idyllic and pastoral landscapes, in a manner similar to Francesco Zuccarelli, his master in Venice. Compared to Zuccarelli, however, he is more rustic and genuine, with no trace of affectation; the nature he depicts always remains Arcadian. In fact, landscape is the genre in which he best expresses his pictorial and colouristic skills, demonstrating great ability in landscapes from a very light and delicate chromatic range to a more consistent and robust one. He was also a skilled 'battler'. Several of his works are in the Correr Museum in Venice.
