The representation of the Madonna and Child with Saint Anne, originated in the Middle Ages and was very popular at the time. Saint Anne, the mother of Mary, as well as the grandmother of Christ, founded the story of Salvation.
Saint Anne holds young Mary in his arms on the left, and on his right the infant Christ. Saint Anne is celebrated on July 26 in the calendar of the Roman Church.
