Lovely head of a beautiful youth with extravagant hairdo. Skillfully sculpted in stone (volcanic tuff or compacted volcanic ash). Minimal remains of polychromy in the hair. Beautiful tender profile.
Provenance: by repute from the Weckschnapp part of the medieval wall (built ca 1400) around Cologne. This type of volcanic stone from the Eifel mountains was indeed used for sculptures from 1300 onwards during the Gothic period in Cologne (cf the project of Technische Hochschule Köln “Geowissenschaftliche Untersuchungen von Kölner Steinskulpturen und Bauplastik des Mittelalters” led by prof. Dr. Ulrike Bergmann). Hence we date it around 1400.
Wear consistent with the age, good condition (nose intact). On a contemporary stand.
Dimensions (without stand): Height 16cm Depth 20cm Width 19cm.
