Johann Mongels CULVERHOUSE, studied at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts, then exhibited in Groningen in 1845 and in Rotterdam and The Hague (1846) before moving to the United States.
In 1849 he exhibited at the American Academy of the Fine Arts, in 1851 at the Boston Athenaeum and at the New Jersey Art Union, and in 1852 at the National Academy of Design and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Several of his works then entered various American museums.
From 1857 to 1864, he participated in the Paris Salons and exhibited again in the Netherlands before returning to the United States. In December 1871, he moved to Syracuse (New York) and exhibited numerous
