Saint John (France, 12th century)

Very Rare Ecclesiastical Architectural Limestone Fragment, probably Bourgogne, depicting Saint John mourning at the Cross. Figure with short curled hair, tilted head with sad and mournful facial expression, hand supporting chin and cheek, other hand at hip or waist level holding Bible, scattered remnants of gilt and polychrome throughout. On later stand approximate height 13 1/2" x 8" x 5", sculpture alone is 11 1/4" x 5 1/2" x 5 1/4". Weathered, old crack, old restoration to right arm.
