workshop
circa 1760
oil on canvas, 69 x 95 cm.
framed 91 x 118 cm.
Provenance: Private collection Geneva, Switzerland
In the back part of the frame, in the lower left, an old cartouche carrying the old attribution to Claude-Joseph Vernet. Other records are present with the inventory numbers of the collections of previous owners.
It is a beautiful marina made by a talented painter of the workshop of the French Claude-Joseph Vernet.
Versions similar to ours are found in the most important museums and private international collections, belonging to a large series of paintings made by the master and his collaborators during his stay in Italy.
The typology of the composition, the executive quality and the attention to detail are typical elements of the prototypes designed by Vernet, then taken over by its best students to cope with the innumerable demands of customers. Vernet lived in Rome for twenty years (1734 - 1753), becoming particularly popular among English aristocrats who made a stop in the Grand Tour.
The painting is in excellent condition, with a beautiful carved and gilded wooden frame.
