French Furniture and Art Pieces of the 18th century and Empire period
A Consulate Console in mahogany by Martin-Guillaume Biennais. Right feet at the back and, at the front, two feet adorned with "antique" caryatids ending in claws carved in the mass. The cariatids and the claws feet are in "Empire green" imitating the old bronze.
A similar model was delivered to the Palace of Fontainebleau in 1804 (for the Prince Joseph's salon).
Our console differs from the model of Fontainebleau due to its feet; that one of Fontainebleau has human "feet" although the inventory of November 23, 1804 clearly indicates "chimeras feet", you will find on this console claws feet "Chimère"... As for the model of Fontainebleau, our console was preconceived to get a mirror background.
