Offered by Galerie Nicolas Lenté
16th to 18th century furniture, paintings and works of art
The representation, of great dramatic effect, shows the inert body of the deposed Christ of the Cross in the arms of the Virgin. This group, placed at the center of the composition, is surrounded by Saint John and Saint Mary Magdalene.
The tears on the faces of the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene accentuate this atmosphere full of emotions.
The composition of the painting is inspired by the triptych of Joos van Cleve "Lamentation" (1524) preserved at the Städel Art Institute in Francfort-sur-le-Main.
Oil on oak panel with its original frame.
Dimensions with frame: h. 51 cm, l. 42 cm.
