A gilt bronze plaquette representing Saint Genevieve, XVIIIth century

Saint Genevieve is standing carrying a book and a large candle in the right hand; a demon is blowing out the flame and an angel is lighting it.

Patron Saint of the city of Paris, Genevieve was a Vth century French Catholich saint, admired and venerated already during her lifetime. Raised in a rich gallo-roman family from Nanterre, she founded the Saint Denis Basilica in Paris and was also known for her defense of the city against the Huns. Amongst her numerous miracles, the scene of this bronze plaque shows the most relevant and reproduced one: during a nocturne visit to Saint Denis church, the Demon blown out her candle, and an angel lit it back inmediately.

In very good condition, in its original gilding.
