A mantel clock in the form of two addorsed – back to back – gilded reclining female sphinxes supporting a drum clock case which is crowned by a pair of satyrs – Pan with his pipes and a Nymph with a bunch of grapes.
All mounted on a marble base decorated with gilded arabesques centred on a bacchic head and supported on gadrooned toupie feet.
Movement autonomy of eight days chiming hours and halves on a bell, silk suspension.
White enamel dial signed “Sotian in Paris”
Sotiau was a well known clockmaker in Paris: he became a maître in 1782 and was established in the rue St. Honoré by the following year until his death in 1791.
