Italy and England (?) circa 1790
Probably a fantasized representation of the pyramid of Caius Cestius and the temple of Saturne, taking up all the clichés of the late 18th century: the intact state of the pyramid, the passers-by in the foreground, but also the balance and play of volumes in the representation. All of these elements are reminiscent of an idealized antique, spearheaded by Robert, Panini, Cassas... The reverse of the frame bears the label of a framer active in London around 1790, in the name of Darling Thompson.
Condition report: wear and minor accidents to the frame (probably his own, although the frame is new throughout).
