MOUSTIERS
A rare earthenware coffee pot and basin with polychrome ‘flag’ decoration with the arms of Philippus van Thiel in the centre.
18th century circa 1750/1760
The rarity of this object lies in the coat of arms inside this famous decoration, which celebrates the victory of the Battle of Fontenoy by French troops on 11 May 1745. It pitted the forces of King Louis XV against a coalition of Austria, the United Provinces, England and Hanover as part of the succession to the House of Austria.
France recovered the town of Tournai. It is possible that Philippus van Thiel, having sided with France, ordered these coins as a sign of loyalty.
