Kimmel, Cornelis (1804 Middelburg - 1877)
He trained at the Middelburg drawing school, then became a student of JH Koekkoek and Pieter van Hanselaere (portrait and landscape painter in Ghent). His paintings are very finely done and bathed in a beautiful light, our painting is an example of this. He is of course inspired by the old Dutch masters who excelled in this genre (as shown in "Figures on the Ice, a Koek en Zopie in the Background" (1856), sold for €16,000 by Sotheby's in 1999) but he knows how to bring his style, a precise touch and modernity to his creations (notably with the near disappearance of the building, for example in our painting we can barely imagine the city in the distance). Our painting benefits from a beautiful period frame with cartouche.
