The painting depicts the moving scene of the Agony of Christ and comes from a passage from the Gospel of Luke (22:43-44[1]) in which Jesus prays alone in a field called the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives. After leaving the apostles in the cenacle, he is accompanied by Peter, John and James to retire in prayer, aware of the fate that awaits him. Having also abandoned his three favorite disciples, he remains alone to pray. During his prayer he receives the visit of an Angel who offers him the bitter cup of the Passion, before his arrest following Judas' betrayal.
Jesus, assailed by human anguish, turns to the Father in supplication and says "your will be done" finally accepting torture and death on the cross.
This fundamental and controversial event in his life can be considered as the beginning of the true Passion of Christ.
