Julien DUPRE (1851-1910) Resting cows Watercolor and gouache highlights signed lower left 36 x 48 cm 44.5x57cm very light foxing in the sky French painter born March 18, 1851 in Paris and died in the same city on April 15, 1910. Dupré studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Isidore Pils (1813-1875) and that of Henri Lehmann. He also studied with Désiré François Laugée, whose daughter, Marie Laugée, he married. A naturalist painter, in the legacy of Jean-François Millet and Jules Breton whom he admired, he observed and painted the life of peasants, playing on light. He gave relief to his painting, accentuating the effects to give strength to his works and began to exhibit at the Salon des artistes français in 1876 with the painting La Moisson en Picardie. He often left the studio (which he shared with his brother-in-law the painter Georges Laugée) located at number 20 boulevard Flandrin in Paris to paint nature on the motif in the countryside. He first painted harvest scenes, in Picardy in particular, then, from 1880, animals observed in the countryside. In 1881, his painting Les Foins earned him a 2nd class medal at the Salon des artistes français. Highly recognized in the United States, many of Julien Dupré's works are kept in American museums. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des artistes français until his death, became a member of the Jury Committee in 1890 and received a gold medal at the 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris, then was decorated with the Legion of Honor in 1892.
