A polychromed wooden sculpture of the Virgin and Child.
Northern Spain, late 13th century.

Measures 32cm tall including later red velvet plinth.

This intimate sculpture shows the crowned Virgin, standing with the Christ child in one hand and a piece of fruit in the other. She is adorned in long, polychromed drapery with gilt highlights. The Christ child’s right arm is missing, the polychrome remains in original condition with some losses of paint, exposed gesso and worn gilding.
