CATALOGUE NOTE
The books in the background of this picture are titled Self Strijt, published in 1620 by the well-known Dutch poet and politician Jacob Cats (1577-1660), Minnedichten, referring to The emblem book Minne-spiegel ter Deughden published in Amsterdam in 1639 by the Catholic poet and play-writer Jan Harmensz. Krul (ca. 1601/2-1646). Krul founded the Amsterdamsche Musijck Kamer, devoted to the cultivation of music drama. There is also a book by the Amsterdam poet and play-writer Gerbrand Adriaensz. Bredero (1585-1618), together with an opened illustrated book. The attribution of the present picture to Vincent Laurensz. van der Vinne I has been endorsed by Dr. Fred G. Meijer.
