Bucolic scene by Maurice Langaskens (1884-1943)

Oil painting on canvas by Maurice Langaskens. Maurice Langaskens was a Belgian painter and printmaker born in Ghent in 1884 and passed away in Schaerbeek in 1946. He notably illustrated works such as L'Empreinte du Dieu by Maxence Van der Meersch. His work is recognized for its refinement and delicate approach to light and nature, making him a key figure in the early 20th-century Belgian art scene.

This painting depicts a bucolic and luminous scene, characteristic of his impressionist and post-impressionist approach. The work illustrates a garden path bathed in light, bordered by lush vegetation and colorful flowers. The trees with dense foliage create a peaceful, shaded atmosphere, while guiding the viewer’s eye towards the background where a man dressed in red is seen heading towards the gate at the end of the garden.
Langaskens uses a vibrant palette and a subtle play of light and shadow, evoking the influence of French impressionists. The brushstrokes are visible, applied in small touches that resemble pointillism in certain leafy areas.
The canvas is signed M. Langaskens for Maurice Langaskens.
