It was on the occasion of the wedding between the young Hippodamia and Pirithous, king of the lapiths, that this kidnapping occurred. The centaurs had been invited as neighbors. However, during the festival, drunk and upset that no homage had been paid to them, the centaurs attacked Hippodamia and the other women in the assembly, which led to a war and ended with the defeat of the centaurs, driven from Mount Pelion.
