Signed ‘Tomotada’ in a cartouche on the back at the bottom of the Sennins cloak.

Bashiko Sennin, or the “Horse Boy Hermit,” is a legendary figure in Japanese folklore known for his mystical connection with horses and his spiritual powers. A humble and compassionate figure, he is said to have attained enlightenment through his devotion to nature and animals, particularly horses. As a sennin (immortal hermit), Bashiko embodies wisdom, harmony with the natural world, and the transcendence of earthly limitations. His tale reflects themes of simplicity, kindness, and the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment.
