Offered by Conservatoire Sakura
Black lacquered wood (roiro) decorated with stylized flowers and tendrils in flat lacquered gold powder (hiramaki-e). The metal elements are in mercury-gilded copper.
Japan, early Edo period, 17th century. An identical jug is kept at the Suntory Museum in Tokyo. The curator attributes it to the Momoyama period around 1600.
In excellent condition considering 4 centuries of existence. A shock on the edge of the base. Missing a gilded copper element.
