Chestnut wood
Good condition
The chest is an essential piece of furniture of the Middle Ages. Fitted with handles, it was designed to be easily transported from one house to another. It could contain household linen, crockery or even silverware.
This rare 16th century chest is made of chestnut wood. The front of the chest is carved in the mass in slight relief. The decoration covers the entire front of the chest. Surrounded by a frieze of channels, we discover two architectural scenes that are completely medieval, namely the stone walls and crenellated towers of a fortified castle of that period. In the centre, under a lock with hasps, is a carved crosspiece.
The uprights and crossbars of the chest, with beautiful proportions, are assembled by a dovetail assembly. The smooth sides have wrought iron handles in the centre. It rests on a moulded plinth in its lower part. This chest is entirely of period and still has its original flap and hinges.
