China Dehua,
Pair of white enamelled porcelain figures representing Buddhist lions seated on openwork pedestals, one of their paws resting on a sphere, their collars adorned with bells. The manes of these mythological animals are treated in slight relief along the length of the back.
These monochrome pieces, also known as ‘Chinese whites’, could, as in this case, contain traces of cold-treated enamels in red, black and gold, produced in the Netherlands at the same time when they arrived in the West. This type of cold decoration can be seen in the Royal Palace in Amalienborg (Denmark), in the Rijsktmuseum in Amsterdam, and in the Dresden Palace in the collections of Augustus the Strong (Elector of Saxony and King of Poland) on these Chinese whites.
