Pair of Régence armchairs moulded, carved and waxed walnut; high and wide straight back slightly sloping and curved at the top. The armrests are straight with padded cuffs. The armrests are flared with scrolls and foliage. The whole is recessed into the lower part of the backrest and rests on a console support decorated with voluble foliage which is inserted into the side rail recessed from the front leg. The wide waistband is scalloped on all sides, strongly curved on the front and flared on the sides. The whole is embellished with fine carvings of leafy shells and lambrequins with volutes enriched with gadrooned foliage and entangled foliage. The whole rests on a base that has no struts and is lightened by a camber, punctuated by scrolls with acanthus leaves.
This model of armchair bears witness to the development of seating during the Regence period. The high, wide, sloping backs, fully upholstered in fabric, and the wide seats were retained from the Grand Siècle, but these elements were complemented by new features resulting from trends that began in the twilight of the Sun King's reign. Less solemnity and rigour in favour of more comfort and gentleness; a philosophy dear to the beginning of this century.
