This satinwood tea caddy exemplifies the exceptional craftsmanship of the early 19th century, a period when tea caddies were regarded not only as functional objects but also as decorative works of art. Satinwood is renowned for its smooth texture and natural luster.
The caddy features a slightly trapezoidal shape with sloping sides, adorned with marquetry forming a black-and-light checkered border. This checkered pattern accentuates the edges of the lid and panels, providing a striking contrast to the piece. The domed lid is carefully crafted, enhancing the sculptural appearance of the object.
The caddy is mounted on brass feet. The side handles are turned wood, and the central locking mechanism is embellished with a brass plaque shaped like a fleur-de-lis. The interior is compartmentalized to separate different varieties of tea.
This type of tea caddy reflects a taste for precious materials and meticulous finishes.
