Magnificent view of Piazza San Marco, considered the most famous and spectacular of all monumental squares, renowned throughout the world for its beauty and architectural integrity. It is also known as "The Drawing Room of Europe" as Napoleon Bonaparte called it, in love with Venice and fascinated by its urban uniqueness, well represented by this enchanting place, which is seen as the most emblematic image of the City.
The painting, of excellent pictorial quality, impeccably expresses the prerogatives of the Venetian spirit with its typical characters who animate the square in characteristic costumes, perfectly described in this splendid canvas.
We are in the middle of the 18th century, the most sumptuous period of the Republic of Venice, and among the great Masters of Venetian painting of the golden age, the name of Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto (Venice, 1697 – 1768), stands out. Among his very famous views of the city, Piazza San Marco is certainly one of the favorite subjects of the great Master and his illustrious workshop.
The author of this fantastic view, to be placed in the second half of the 18th century, is part of the small circle of his most valid followers and collaborators, demonstrating an exceptional artistic vein both in the depiction of the monuments and in the description of the numerous and varied characters. The perfection in the rendering of all the architectural details of the square is truly remarkable, highlighted by a spectacular play of light and shadow that together with an accentuated perspective gives the canvas the sensation of three-dimensionality.
It is also worth highlighting the splendid chromatic range of the scene, which differs from similar works for a rich variety of warm and cold shades, well matched to each other and remained unchanged over time, still showing a notable vivacity.
The conditions of the work are excellent.
The lacquered and gilded frame is typical of the 18th century Veneto and is the original of the canvas.
