Pair of Large Lacquer Boxes, Japan circa 1900-1920

These large Japanese lacquer boxes, dating from the Meiji/Taish? period (early 20th century), measure 36.5 cm in height and 29 x 29 cm at the base. They stand out for their rarity and elegance. With an unusual square shape and rounded corners, they are adorned with delicately engraved and gilded motifs depicting cranes in flight, symbols of longevity and prosperity, alongside flowering plum branches evoking renewal. On the lid, a Ka-Mon with three hexagons containing stylized flowers adds a touch of geometric balance while reflecting the noble origin of these boxes.

Traditionally used during New Year celebrations to hold festive dishes, they remain in excellent condition, preserved thanks to their tomobako (original wooden storage boxes designed for protection).
