Very rare seaside views of Madagascar taken from India in the 19th century (1876) by the French painter Macaux.
In 1876, Madagascar was still an independent kingdom ruled by Queen Ranavalona II of the Merina dynasty. She ruled the country with her husband Rainilaiarivony, co-king and prime minister. Her reign was marked by the increasing Westernization of the country. Twenty years later, Madagascar became a French colony.
