Nicolas BERTIN (Paris, 1667-1736)
Vertumnus and Pomona
Oil on canvas - 82 x 65 cm
A pupil of Guy-Louis Vernansal (1648-1729), Nicolas Bertin is particularly renowned for his delightful depictions of mythological subjects, which appealed to patrons seeking to decorate their private mansions. In this episode from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Vertumnus, the god of gardens, attempts to win the love of the nymph Pomona, with whom he is infatuated. Here, he employs a surprising stratagem: he disguises himself as an old woman to approach his beloved without arousing her suspicions.
