Offered by Galerie Théorème
Virgin and Child, known as a "birthing Madonna," made of Nevers faience. Decorated in the Italian "A Compendiario" style, featuring blue, ochre, and manganese colors.
17th century
Height: 32 cm
The "A Compendiario" style is inspired by the Italian trend of simplifying decorations, which originated in Faenza and Deruta at the end of the 16th century. This approach served as a contrast to the elaborate ornamentation of the majolica of the previous century.
During the same period, similar simplified designs were also produced in Rouen at the Poterat workshop, where the white background was used to emphasize the modestly painted motifs.
