The Oroba is a traditional vest-shaped armor native to Nias Island, known for its historical craftsmanship and protective qualities. The oldest versions, known as öroba uli mbuaya, are crafted from crocodile skin. These are composed of 11 pieces of crocodile hide, connected using the ösumö technique. A central piece of crocodile back skin, with its distinctive dermal frills, forms the vest's backside, serving as the main component due to its larger size. Two other sizable pieces cover the chest down to the waist, while two curved sections protect the shoulders. Another pair of crocodile skins are strategically positioned to shield the sides of the body, armpits, and the back of the neck.
Through a meticulous process, the crocodile hide becomes exceptionally hard and rigid, rendering the armor nearly impenetrable to enemy weapons. However, the front section, from the neck to the lower abdomen, remains open and unbuttoned, providing limited protection in this area.
