Large Virgin and Child ( 1.25m), Champagne, circa 1500

Large Virgin and Child in walnut wood, carved in the round, trampling on Eve biting into the apple.
The theme of the Virgin and Child is the most represented in all Christian art, whereas the infancy of Jesus is almost totally elided by the canonical evangelists. This representation is probably the result of an archaic theme (Isis suckling Harpocrates, the child Horus).
Numerous representations of the “woman with child” can be found in most of the world's cultures, including pre-Christian Europe.
A very fine presence, both in terms of the quality of the sculpture and its dimensions (height 1.20 m).
The Child holds a dove, the Virgin a scepter.
Walnut wood, waxed with hot wax, in good condition.
From Champagne workshops, late 15th/early 16th c.
