THE ARTWORK
While a Dutch ship sails from a port in Italy, we see different classes meeting. Some are busy loading and unloading cargo while others take a pleasant walk along the harbor. In the background we see a building similar to the loggia della Benedizioni. The obelisk may have been inspired by the Saint John Lateren obelisk. These two buildings are next to each other in Rome.
In the left corner you see two people on a rowing boat arriving at the quay. On the right we see people sitting on the stairs. a third person joins in just right. There's a lot going on in the scene. Each person is busy with his own task.
Storck, like many harbor painters, paid attention to the smallest detail. On the left side you see two seagulls flying. This bird is scattered everywhere on the scene (you can also spot them at the top). He also paid attention to the incidence of light. Judging by the shadows and the clouds, the scene takes place in the morning. If you look closely through the masts of the boats, you will see a mountain landscape in the distance.
THE ARTIST
Jacobus Storck was a Dutch painter from the Golden Age. He was born on September 8, 1641 and died here in 1692. His oeuvre consists of a combination of river and harbor landscape art filled with city people. A common element is the addition of a ship in his works. He came from a family of artists. his father was Jan Jansz Storck. His two sons, Johannes and Abraham, also became painters. Little has been preserved of John. Abraham, on the other hand, was a marine painter like his father. they both shared the knowledge of depicting ships.
