THE ARTIST
Jan Jacob Coenraad Spohler, also spelled Spöhler, was a Dutch painter renowned for his landscapes, cityscapes, and winter scenes featuring ice skating and other winter activities. Born in Amsterdam, he was the son of Jan Jacob Spohler, a prominent landscape painter, from whom he learned the craft. Jan Jacob Coenraad followed closely in his father’s artistic footsteps, adopting a similar style and subject matter, which contributed to the continuation of this distinctive tradition.
Spohler exhibited his works at various Tentoonstellingen van Levende Meesters (Exhibitions of Living Masters), where he gained recognition for his picturesque depictions of the Dutch countryside and urban landscapes. His works often celebrate the charm and simplicity of rural life, showcasing his exceptional ability to portray dynamic scenes with meticulous attention to detail.
Remaining a bachelor throughout his life, Spohler resided and worked in Amsterdam, where he passed away at the age of 56. His legacy is cemented through his evocative winter landscapes, which continue to be cherished for their artistry and historical insight into 19th-century Dutch culture.
