REQUEST INFORMATION
Excellent condition oil on canvas in a recent frame (white gold water gilded, protected by a museum acrylic).
A very rare opportunity to acquire an excellent Fauve painting by a major artist (albeit not known mostly for its Fauve period, shaving two zeros off the price).
Signed and dated 1909
The piece:
This picture dates from a short period when Survage, yet to become a major surrealist painter, was close to the Fauve movement, and a student of Matisse.
Although very personal, the fauve influence is obvious. This oil painting can be compared to the Collioure paintings of Matisse and Derain (1905).
Survage would also have a Collioure period, in the 1930s.
The artist:
Born in Lappeenranta (now in Finland), Survage (whose last name had many variants, before settling on the French-sounding Survage) first associated with the pre-communist Russian avant-garde, before travelling across Europe, and settling in France in 1908 or possibly 1909. He attended the Académie Matisse (active 1908-1909).
Dimensions:
51 x 61 cm (70 x 80 cm framed)
20 x 24 in (27 1/2 x 31 1/2 in framed)
