Is it a unicorn or the sacred stag from a Saint Hubertus sculpture? Both are possible: up to you if you want to be the Virgin or the hunter-saint. The elegance, the sea-horse like shape of the muzzle and the hole in the forehead may point towards a unicorn. However, that hole may be posterior and the two small holes on top of the head might have held the cross that Saint Hubertus saw between the (now disappeared) antlers.
According to the legend, in the 7th century, nobleman Hubertus went hunting on a Good Friday (instead of going to church) and as he was about to kill a stag, the animal turned and he saw a crucifix between its antlers. He fell on his knees and a heavenly voice told him to lead a holy life and go to bishop Lambert of Liege. When Lambert was assassinated in 708, Hubertus became 31st Bishop of Maastricht and later first Bishop of Liège. Also known as ‘Apostle of the Ardennes’. Germany? France? 16th century.
Oak, weathered, losses (antlers or unicorn, ears). Dimensions: 20x24x7cm.
