A wrought iron messengers casket.
French, late 16th century.
Measures 13.5 x 10 x 7.5cm.
Rectangular in form with a slightly domed lid. The locks escutcheon is hidden behind a latch which opens by pushing a secret button on a false hinge. There are two loops to each side from which a thong of leather would be threaded to suspend the casket when travelling. Complete with key and in fine condition.
Boxes or caskets, like this were created in France during the late 15th century to facilitate the movement of valuable objects, including missals, small illuminated books of prayers, money and jewellery. The four iron loops on the sides allow the casket to be strung on a leather belt and attached to a saddle or suspended inside another larger chest to ensure safe transport.
