These rare, untouched examples of 19th-century marionette puppets, crafted by hand in France, showcase remarkable artistry. Their heads are carved from pine, while their arms and bodies are carefully hand-sewn, still dressed in their original clothing.
Glove puppets, in contrast, are manipulated by the puppeteer's hand, with the fingers controlling the character's head and arms through a sleeve. Some of Europe's most iconic puppets are glove puppets: France’s Guignol, originating from Lyon; Italy’s Pulcinella, a key figure in Burattini theater; England’s Punch; and Germany’s Hans Wurst (John Sausage) or Kasperle.
