Manuel Rodríguez Lozano, the great Mexican muralist, fled political troubles and settled in Europe between 1914 and 1921. When he fled, he was not a fully formed artist, but became one in Europe. He met all the avant-garde, in particular Picasso with whom he shared the Spanish language, and became a student of Andre Lhote.
This particular piece is strongly reminiscent of Lhote, while more infused with the classic period. It is possibly the only painting that he signed and that can be attributed firmly to him during his Parisian period.
Oil on mahogany panel, perfect condition. Modern cassetta style frame.
