Limewood, polychromed (chest covered with textile) bust of Saint Aloysius of Gonzaga (1568-1591). Although from noble descent, he gave up all his privileges and was accepted by the Jesuits in 1585. He died from the consequences of the bubonic plague at the early age of 23 as a result of taking care of the victims of this epidemic in Rome in 1591. He was canonized in 1726 and is patron Saint of youth, students, caregivers and AIDS patients.
The hollowed inside would have held a relic of the Saint. Weathered, traces of xylophagi, some losses of paint but overall excellent condition.
