Pair of French Empire candlesticks signed Gérard-Jean Galle

This exquisite pair of gilt bronze Empire candlesticks, stamped with the mark “G F,” is attributed to the esteemed bronzier Gérard-Jean Galle (1788–1846), son and successor of the celebrated Claude Galle. Gérard-Jean Galle continued the family legacy of fine craftsmanship, establishing himself as a leading figure in the Parisian bronze industry.

The candlesticks rest on circular bases adorned with intricate acanthus leaves and floral motifs arranged in concentric rings. Rising from the base, a gracefully fluted shaft is crowned by a beautifully sculpted capital in the form of a wickerwork basket overflowing with delicate flowers and foliage. This basket supports the candle holder, designed in the shape of a Medici vase, demonstrating remarkable attention to detail and artistic finesse. The exceptional quality of the craftsmanship and the meticulous chiseling reflect the superior skills of Gérard-Jean Galle.

Cast in mercury-gilded bronze, this pair of Empire candlesticks is a fine example of elegance and decorative artistry, boasting a harmonious blend of forms and ornamentation. Both pieces are preserved in excellent condition.

Origin: France, Empire period circa 1815

Dimensions: Height 29.5 cm (11.6?), Base diameter 13.5 cm (5.3?)

Gérard-Jean Galle (1788-1846)
Gérard-Jean Galle inherited his father Claude Galle’s renowned bronze workshop upon his death, swiftly proving his expertise by continuing the high standards of his predecessor. His workshop, located on Rue Vivienne, was frequented by an elite clientele and gained further distinction when Gérard won a silver medal at the 1819 Exposition de l’Industrie for his superb collection of bronzes. He specialized in creating clocks and light fittings, with his works gracing royal collections, including pieces housed in Stockholm Castle.
